Mixed and Interreligious Marriage and Families

Mixed (Interchurch) Marriage

Mixed marriages, also known as interchurch marriages, refer to marriages between a Catholic and a member of a different Christian church. These marriages offer a unique giftedness to the Church and have much to contribute to the ecumenical movement. They also can present the couple with particular pastoral questions that are best addressed together with local pastors and pastoral ministers.

Interreligious Marriage

Interreligious marriages, also known as marriages with disparity of cult, refer to marriages between a Catholic and a member of a different religious tradition (Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, etc.). These marriages also offer a unique giftedness to the Church and have much to contribute to interreligious dialogue. Like interchurch marriages, they also can present the couple with questions that are best addressed with local pastors and pastoral ministers.

The Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs also provides expertise in answering pastoral and theological questions related to other matters involving ecumenical and interreligious relations.
